Elite Eight Report: Adios Amigos

It's becoming an annual March tradition. The annual waving good-bye to the Three Amigos. Wait for it..wait for it....here it comes.....

¡Adios Amigos!

Amherst (AP) - The Elders romped out to the lead in a three horse race overtaking the Catholic Boyz keyed by upset victories by VCU (the last team in!) and Kentucky! Elevated to 11 wins and taking two teams into the Final Four made it a magical Elite Eight weekend for the old guys. A major matchup in Saturday night's JV game between Butler and VCU may decide this year's Calcutta.

The Catholic Boyz hung on to a tremendous Butler victory on Saturday night to keep them sitting alone in second place and with an opportunity to grab a share of the Calcutta lead with a victory Saturday and a Kentucky loss against UConn. They parlayed their hot opening round wins and have hung around with #8 seed Butler, America's darlings.

The Bunch of Chieftans assured that they would hit the board with a solid UConn showing against Arizona. They can create a three way tie for the whole enchilada with a sweep in the Final Four and a Butler win on Saturday. Wouldn't that be something?

The Tres Amigos were looking pretty good on Friday night with Arizona and UNC advancing to Regional Final games on the weekend. Unfortunately both teams took first half siestas and didn't have the legs to complete a run to the final four. They complete the superfecta in fourth, but alas out of the money again. Thanks for coming. Look on the bright side, Roy Williams still has four timeouts left....

The Win-Docs came in like a lion and went out like a lamb this March as top seeds Duke and Kansas bit the dust. Looks like Artie won't be scheduling any meetings in Rochester next year.

The Counselors couldn't hack the morning line favorite noose I laid on them and watched in horror as better seed after better seed was upset. The last being Florida who took a terrible shot at the end.

As projected, the bottom of the Calcutta was the Tax Men (7th) and The Commish (8th/last/basement dweller).

Down Goes Duke!! Down Goes Duke!!

What a disappointment. The Win-Docs took one on the chin and it looks like the back-to-back title hopes took a turn for the worse after the AZ Wildcats took it to them on Thursday night.


UConn looked extremely strong taking down pretender San Diego State and the Bunch looks poised to take down the Calcutta for a record fifth time.


The Catholic Boyz held serve with the upstart Butler Bulldogs who held off the late-rallying Badgers of Wisconsin (see picture below).


The Tax Men and Statesmen have two critical games tonight and can move up the leaderboard significantly with a couple W's.


The Amigos vaulted into the hunt with the AZ upset win and have North Carolina in a favored game against Marquette tonight.


The Counselors remain alive with Florida, the top remaining seed in the Southeast, who are playing exceptional ball and could carry them to 3 more wins to hit the board.


The road to the Yellow Jacket still goes through Houston, it's anybody's contest.

Calcutta Tightens Up Heading Into Sweet Sixteen

Cleveland (UPI) -The Calcutta just got very interesting. The Catholic Boyz have started to leak major oil and Freddy's worst nightmare occurred in Cle-Town, where the Orange went down hard in a final minute Chernobyl-like meltdown.

The Catholic Boyz (8) are clinging to a one-win lead heading into the Sweet Sixteen as they carry in #2 seed San Diego State and underdog Butler. Two MAJOR head-to-heads loom on the horizon with the second-place Bunch.

The Bunch of Chieftans (7) couldn't have drawn it up better. Head to heads with UConn-SD State and Wisconsin-Butler now both appear to be winnable games. Not to mention that Marquette is playing as well as anyone and they could set back the Amigos with a win there. This team is very dangerous entering the Sweet 16.

The Elder Statesmen (7) probably would have taken a split of their games yesterday if you asked them in the morning, but when Texas called timeout with the ball and a 2 point lead with 12 seconds left, it left everyone scratching their head. VCU wins and will take on a #10 seed in the next round, so they've gone a long way to keeping the Elders in the hunt. Tied with the Bunch, a key matchup with the Tax Men's top seed Ohio State will be one of the deciding positioning contests next week for their highest remaining seed, Kentucky.

The Three Amigos (6) snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when Arizona pulled off it's last minute heroics over Texas. North Carolina took care of business, so the Amigos head into the 16 with two teams left and two points out. They're still alive and kicking, but tough games ahead.

The defending co-champs, the Win-Doctors (6), have their two remaining top seeds left and 7 possible points remain (if you're counting at home. i.e. Art on his fingers). Both top seeds look strong and Kansas' region is completely upside down. A Duke-Kansas final won't make anyone in the Calcutta very happy.

The Tax Men (5) had a feeling they would be left with 2 teams at this juncture, they just didn't figure the Spiders (the Commish predicted this would be the Men's sleeper) would be one of them. May have to change team name to One and a Half Men. Both remaining teams have tough games, top seed Ohio State faces a very good Kentucky team and the Spiders will try and knock off #1 Kansas.

The morning line favorites had a major collapse over the weekend and have only the Florida Gators to show for it. Steaming out of the gate with four wins on Thursday and grabbing Calcutta blog headlines, the Counselors (5) mid-level seed strategy went up in flames. Can't wait to hear Baki's take on the drafting only two years since last donning the coveted yellow bracket.

The Commish & Crew (4) survived the Sweet Sixteen with a bittersweet win by #10 seed Florida State, who next plays an #11 seed and could sneak out another victory before the Commish's eventual demise. Another year, another donation. This is starting to get old. The morning line odds of 15-1 look right on the money about now. Thanks a lot, Shittsburgh.

Boom Goes the Dynamite!

Amherst NY (Reuters) - You couldn't ask for a better first round of games, four straight games with buzzer beaters, a couple major upsets and the Calcutta off to a rousing and potential record-breaking start. The standings have been updated and can be found in the upper right side-bar.

CATHOLIC BOYZ, COUNSELORS ROAR OUT TO 4 WINS ON OPENING THURSDAY

The Catholic Boyz with three winnable games today (Syracuse, Georgetown and George Mason) could tie the record set by the Bunch in 2002 of seven (7) first round victories. Propelled by Morehead State's improbable upset of Louisville - he went all Jimmy Chitwood on them. Cries of "We Want Morehead" verberated all through Kentucky as the cross-state rival did in the Big East Cardinals (Sorry Amigos). To top it off, the Zags put a beat down on the Johnnies and the Boyz are sitting in the catbird seat.

The morning line favorites did nothing but support the Commish's early thoughts of how it would go down. The Counselors enjoyed solid victories by Big East teams West Virginia and Cincinnati and impressive wins by Florida and K-State locked up a tie for the top spot going into day two. If the barristers can sneak two wins out today, it may be enough to separate from the pack.

The Bunch, Statesmen and Amigos all batted .500 on the day going 2-2 in their four matchups. The Three Amigos took the biggest blow of the day with the Louisville loss and survived a Temple buzzer beater to keep their hopes alive. The Bunch of Chieftans used strong victories by UConn and Wisconsin to maintain its stalking pace with a couple good teams going for them today (Notre Dame, Marquette & UNLV). Should they pick up a couple of wins today, they'll be squarely in the hunt. The Statesmen survived a Kentucky scare and the Jimmer put on a show proving they earned their #3 seed.

The Commish only could muster a win by top seeded Pitt going 1-2 on the day and it didn't look good for the captain as the Johnnies proved that they struggle on the road. Clemson was game early but the Counselors' Mounties took control with a 9-0 run before the half to tie it up and break away in the second half. The longshot Tax Men went 1-3 on the day, picking up an upset win by Richmond. It looks worse than it really is for the Tax Men as they get their big dogs rolling today.

The only goose egg of the day was served up by the Win-Docs who went 0 for 3 (Thursday), but return its two top seeds in action today.

And They're Off....

Amherst NY (UPI) - And they're off! The 2011 Calcutta draft night had some highs and lows, but all in all everyone's slate has been wiped clean at 0-0.

Last year's champions were celebrated and the coveted yellow jacket made a brief appearance, but Dr. Mark skated off before he could be photographed in it. The Bunch and Win-Doctors should be proud of their respective 2010 record-setting efforts of 15 victories.

This being the 13th year of Calcutta gambling, we continue to have a good time, laugh and stay together as a band of 8 teams. We had some notable folks missing from this year's activities, but every team was represented.

As always several teams went for the home run teams, some conserved cash, and some went with the mid-level seeds to stockpile wins in the first two rounds. The average winning margin over the past 12 years is 12.33, last year being the aberration.

So here we go with the morning line odds, Commish-commentary and ASR (Average Seed Ratings) for each of the 8 teams:

1 - The Counselors (3-1) conserved cash in the escrow account all evening and were made morning line favorites by Vegas with a very low ASR of 7.0. Looking to go for middle level victories and hoping to win two games with four seeds (two 5s and two 6s) in the first two rounds and hoping 2 seed Florida comes to play. I really like Kansas State as a 5 seed and Vanderbilt and Cincinnati could sneak out those second wins. Sleeper pick: Xavier.

2 - The Elder Statesmen (7-2) went back to basics and the middle of the road picks. With no seed higher than 3, but none higher than 11, they chalked up a 7.38 ASR and need some solid work by their two 4 seeds, SEC tourney champ Kentucky and Big 12 power Texas (struggling as of late). After shunning the Notre Dame temptation and getting that mid-draft bathroom break made all the difference. Sleeper pick: Missouri.

3 - Win-Doctors (4-1) were ranked high even though their ASR (9.75) was down near the bottom. Anyone notice how quiet it was tonight? Hmm. Smitty was half asleep all night, well at least after they shot their load early with big guns Kansas (44) and Duke (39). Not much else left to work with and hoping the Big 10 mid-seeds Michigan and Illinois can pick up a win. Need an upset somewhere to win it, but with two #1s the defending co-champs should be in the mix late. Sleeper: Princeton (maybe).

4 - The Catholic Boyz (9-2, 8.13 ASR) had another solid middle of the road, no-nonsense draft. Will need solid efforts out of Syracuse, Georgetown and a win out of both of their 8 seeds, they could be there late with a game San Diego State squad leading the way. The Boyz rarely make mistakes on draft night and tonight was no different. Sleeper pick: George Mason.

6 (tie) - The Bunch (5-1, 7.75 ASR) was probably the most animated team all evening. After riding Butler's coattails to the final game last year, they didn't disappoint on draft night. It's anybody's Calcutta and the Bunch went Big East with UConn, Notre Dame and Marquette. Their Southeast Big 10 squads can each win a couple games, never count Tom Izzo out in March. Sleeper: UNLV.

6 (tie) - The Three Amigos (5-1) had a couple steal of the night type picks with North Carolina (23) and Louisville (23). Has a team in each bracket (other than the Southeast - not a fan of UCLA) that can do some damage. The Amigos have been quiet for a few years, could be the year they get the band back together. ASR: 8.38. Sleeper: Utah State.

7 - The Commish & Assoc. (15-1) look to be one of the two remaining long shots on the board. Lack of focus, alcohol, studying all are key excuses to be used in the coming weeks. Needs solid efforts out of the Southeast in Pitt and St. Johns and mid level seeds Tennessee and Washington. Without an upset in round one, the Commish is cooked. ASR: Dismal 9.75. Sleeper: Oakland.

8 - The Tax Men (20-1) turned things over to a rookie draft night manager who went on an early Venus Williams-like shopping spree. Spending big dough (45) on Ohio State and Purdue (28) there was little in the tank for the Tax Men for the remainder of the evening (ASR - 10.5!!). Need upsets by Richmond and Villanova to have a shot at the board. Sleeper: Richmond.

Houston, We Have a Problem...

Mark your calendars for March 15th when we'll tip off the 2011 edition of the Calcutta in the CTB&K Main Conference Room. Please let me know if you are unable to make it or if you will be sending a team representative.


We'll be celebrating the 13th annual calcutta draw this year and based on last year's record-tying results (tie between the Win-Docs and Brady Bunch) this year should be one not like any other (if I can quote my pal in the media business, Jim Nantz).


The coveted Yellow Jacket and elusive Chalise (sic) are awaiting this year's winner......but many questions loom....


- Will the Big East land 11 teams in the tournament, only to have 10 of them go out in the first two rounds?

- Will the Commish hit the board this year?


- Will Coach K throw a hissy fit before the sweet sixteen?


- Will the Catholic Boyz select Temple?


- Will Daggum Roy get his Tar Heels into the tournament?


- Will Smitty fit into the Yellow Jacket?


- Will Jim Burr and Tim Higgins draw the same regional and get loaded before the game?


- Will Brad Hall show up for the draw?


- Will Ed Hightower pull an Ed Hochuli and wear the tightest ref shirt possible?


- Will there be bathroom breaks for the Elder Statesmen?


- Will Kansas get beat by an international sharp shooter from Turkey?


- Have the 3 Amigos been squabbling and potentially have a team shakeup?

Bunch Ties Record, Clinches Tie for Calcutta Title

One thing we know for sure, the Bunch's name will be on the Chalise as part of the 2010 championship. The improbable Butler Bulldogs played that stifling defense again and kept their opponent under 60 for the fifth straight tourney game. The Bunch is threatening to setting a Calcutta record that may never be broken if West Virginia beats Big Bad Duke tonight and has drawn even with the Win-Docs record of 15 total Calcutta wins.

If Coach K's Devils win tonight, it sets up an interesting scenario between the Bunch and Win-Docs for a Monday night matchup that will decide if the Bunch's name will be alone or will have company.

Elite Eight Report: Let Them Play!

This is what we know: The Catholic Boyz have locked up the third slot and will be playing spoiler for the Win-Doctors, come next Saturday evening and Sparty to take out the Cinderella and the home team (!) Butler Bulldogs.

The Mano a Mano duel has come down to a huge matchup next weekend when the second place Win-Docs (13 pts) put Duke up against the narrowly leading Bunch of Chieftans' (14 pts) West Virginia Mountaineers. What's in the balance? The Calcutta title, the all-time lead for Calcutta titles, a shot at the all-time win record of 15. So, in summary, LOTS.

There's been quite a bit of banter over the interwebs between these two teams over the past two weeks and it's time to settle it on the court. We almost had a two way tie at 14 with both teams carrying 2 teams in on opposite brackets (let's say I was rooting for some of that). Of course, CBS will have something to do with it (see we need Duke for ratings).

Round One Notebook: Chieftans Surge, Win-Docs Strong

News and Notes from the Opening Round

- Results are up for the opening round as we head into the weekend.

- The Bunch of Chieftans surged to 5 wins yesterday to grab a share of the lead with the Win-Doctors. Lots of Jersey Shore fist-pumps from Section 218 yesterday.

- Win-Doctors looking for respect in opening round blog, complaints have been rolling in. Regardless the two long time nemesis' are at each other's throats with six wins each. Let the smack talk commence.

- Four way tie for second between the Elders, Catholic Boyz, Tax Men and Tres Amigos. Still six teams very much in the hunt. Big second round games should separate the Men from the Boyz. LOL.

- The pressure of being the morning line favorites have the Counselors in fade mode. Looks like a repeat is remote.

- The Commish got off the schneid, just trying to avoid the record books for futility. They need one more win to stay away from the loser moniker.

- The Cuse showed some muster last night that had me dancin'.......

Longshots Reign on Opening Day and the Big Least

West Amherst, NY (AP)

It was a big day for longshots The Tax Men and the Elder Statesmen, both hammering out 3 wins on day one. In a day where three Big East teams bit the dust (Georgetown, Notre Dame and Marquette) and another survived a major scare (Villanova) from a #15 seed from the Northeast Conference (Robt Morris), there were lots of story on the Calcutta front.

The Tax Men showed their mettle winning with their #2 seeds and picking up a major upset with the MAC champion Ohio Bobcats treating Georgetown with a little Hoya Suxa. With Maryland and Florida State representing tomorrow, the Tax Men could move into the second round with a solid four teams. Their only loss of the day was #14 seed Montana late into the evening.

The Elders shook off the longshot designation and picked up two major upsets with Murray State beating Vandy at the buzzer and St. Mary's (Cal) easily handling the itsy bitsy Spiders of Richmond. Kansas held court and all of a sudden the Elders are in the thick of things again. Here's another look at the buzzer beater by the Speed Racers:




While the Elders and Tax Men were reveling in their day one fortunes, yours truly is looking at sharing the bottom of the barrel record for first round wins and threatening to own it. The Commish dialed up goose eggs (see inset) with shots at the end of two games that went clank. Losing Georgetown pretty much was the kiss of death and it was nice knowing you all.



The morning line favorites, the Counselors, couldn't seem to handle the pressure being the chalk going into the tourney as defending co-champs. Major losses by Vandy, Marquette and Notre Dame have this team with a lot of catching up to do.


The Win-Doctors had a decent showing with wins from Tennessee, BYU and Washington offset by a loss from #16 seed E. Tennessee State. So they are on the board with the two longshot teams, all with three victories on Day 1.


The Bunch of Chieftans grabbed a Butler win and Sam Houston was game in defeat, but couldn't put it together in the final two minutes. Big day for the Chieftans tomorrow.


The Amigos had an up and down .500 day, pulling off a pair of upsets with Old Dominion taking out the Irish and Northern Iowa 3-balling the Rebels out of the tourney, and New Mexico surviving a scare from the Grizz. The other half of their Virginia contingent, Richmond didn't hold up their end of the bargain, and SDSU played valiantly before losing to the Vols (with some help from the refs) before some late night hearbreak.

It was a quiet day for the defending co-champion Catholic Boyz until about 12:30am when the bell tolled for Wake Forest and another OT buzzer beater plunging a dagger into the Amigos. The Boyz will get things really revved up tomorrow with five squads in action.

As the Commish will be at the regionals downtown all day tomorrow, the big board will be updated on Saturday morning.

No matter what happens, just remember, chicks dig the long ball.....

Counselors, Catholic Boyz Celebrate 09 Co-Titles

The 2010 Calcutta got off to a rousing start as the yellow jacket (note the matching tie) was presented to the Counselors celebrating their first title in 11 years. The Co-Champs donned the yellow jacket and smiles were abound for the legal beagles.


Next up were the Catholic Boyz, who accepted the Calcutta Chalise (engraved with both teams) for the second time in four years. Congrats to both teams for a job well done in 2009.

So now it was time for game-on and a sense of nervousness came over the room for the first team to be auctioned off. The Catholic Boyz tossed out the first team and they were off....so here's the Commish's morning lines and draft night synopsis as the 2010 Calcutta is underway.....

COUNSELORS MADE MORNING LINE FAVORITES
The Counselors (3-1) were made the morning line favorites based on the lowest average seed ranking of 7.5 and scooping #1 seed Kentucky to boot. The co-champions, missing half of their normal draft night team had a quiet and strong showing. With one strong #4 Vanderbilt and one weak #4 Purdue (had at the bargain basement price of $10) the legal pros bobbed and weaved all night long. Only their Midwest Region has any sign of weakness. If they steal a couple wins out of Big East #6 seeds Marquette and the Irish, look out. Sleeper Team: Minnesota.

The Catholic Boyz (4-1) and defending co-champions made another strong draft showing, challenging the Counselors as the team to beat. Selecting teams from all of the major conferences, they have a lot of eggs in the #3 Baylor basket. With a low ASR of 7.88, they need some second round magic out of their mid-seeds (#5 Spartans, #7's Clemson and Oklahoma State, #8 Gonzaga or #9's Wake Forest and Louisville) in order to be a factor in weekend number 2. Only one team seeded lower than #9. Sleeper Team: Louisville.

The Three Amigos (5-1) are looking to bounce back after a fourth place finish out of the money last year. We made them the third choice based on strong #3 seeds in New Mexico and Pittsburgh anchoring their brackets and solid mid level seeds such as #7 Richmond, #8 Texas and #9 Northern Iowa. Will need to do well early to be around late. The question is when will we say Adios to the Amigos this year? ASR: 8.0 Sleeper Team: San Diego State.

The Win-Doctors (7-1) were awfully quiet in the corner and didn't seem to have the normal tension among team members. We've got them as the fourth choice mainly on reputation alone. They'll need two teams (#1 Duke and #2 Ohio State) to thunder through the brackets to have any chance at sipping from the Chalise again. They also could use a mid-level seed to make the sweet sixteen to be a factor. ASR: 8.38 Sleeper Team: Washington.

Rounding out the bottom half of the morning line selections is the Bunch (10-1). For years a perennial contender, they've come up short in recent Calcuttas and need to right the ship. They'll be cheering on locally-bound #2 West Virginia, hot off a Big East Conference Tournament Championship and #5 seeds Texas A&M and Butler to win some early contests. #5 Xavier, upset in the A-10 tourney has a tough draw of Big Ten Minnesota who has been improving under Tubby Smith. ASR: 8.63 Sleeper Team: Georgia Tech.

Next up in the morning line are the Tax Men (15-1) who went with a similar strategy as the Commish, big guns blazing and try to catch a high seed upset. Three strong teams head up the Tax Men squad, with two #2's in Villanova and Kansas State and a #4 Maryland from the ACC. The Tax Men will have to ride their big dogs to the Elite Eight where anything can happen. ASR: 9.13 Sleeper Team: Utah State.

The Commish (15-1) again is one of the longshots. Never having enjoyed a sip out of the Calcutta Chalise and closest to the yellow jacket was putting it on the co-champs tonight. They played the hometown card and grabbed the Orange playing in nearby Buffalo and then hopefully in Salt Lke. Staying within the Big East, they picked up #3 Georgetown, who seemed to be improving late in the year. After shooting their wad early, they'll need a mid-level #8 UNLV or #4 Wisconsin to win a few games to go anywhere. ASR: 9.0 Sleeper Team: Florida.

The Elder Statesmen (20-1) is the longest shot on the board. With one of the largest bids in Calcutta history ($51 on #1 Kansas) it appeared the strategy that has made them one of the best Calcutta competitors in the history of the contest went completely out the window. their next highest seed is #5 Temple and then it's double figure seeds baby. Best of luck, there's always the 10% National Championship coin.... ASR: 9.75 (Wow!) Sleeper Team: St. Mary's.

A Tradition Unlike Any Other?

As the Calcutta approaches tonight I learned that a couple of other sports have stolen some of our tradition away.....can you believe some hick golf tournament gives away a green jacket?

WTF? And they have more than one jacket?? Who do these guys think they are stealing our yellow jacket theme, just by changing the color?


So then after a little more googling, I find out there's another Chalise out there, but they enlarged it because they have Chalise Envy about our coveted trophy....

I'm beginning to get a little complex here....since when does that midget Bettman get off stealing my ideas? The Calcutta Counselors are on the case whether or not any patent infringement has occurred in either of these cases.


Well, hopefully these lawsuits will boost the Calcutta coffers...speaking of which, remember to bring yo' two-fitty tonight.....here's a little sumthin to get you pumped for this weekend...

12th Annual Calcutta Launches Blog

West Amherst, NY (Reuters)

We're going viral here at Commish Central. No more emailing the results, only to have them deleted into an old recycle bin. What in the name of Gene Keady's comb-over am I going to do about it? We're talking Calcutta Blog, fellow Calcuttians. As we approach Tuesday night's 12th annual Calcutta extraordinaire, here's a one stop shop for current Up To The Minute Results (see sidebar), The Goods we're all after - the Coveted Calcutta Chalise (spelling) and the elusive famous Yellow Jacket. In addition, the Record Books, Past Champions and Rules of Combat can be found on the right sidebar, to boot.

On Tuesday night, the Counselors will don the Yellow Jacket for the first time ever (and it'll probably fit Baki) along with 2009 co-champions The Catholic Boyz, who will celebrate their second championship in the last four years.

I hope you all like the new Blog and format, if you have a Google Account, you can become a follower so you'll know when the blog is updated with a post. As far as remarks on the brackets, all I can say is woo-hoo on the Buffalo draw and the Cuse comin' to the B-Lo. Definitely some sour grapes out there in Hoya Land, especially this fellow. Once again, Duke proved that Coach Gay (K) can sleep with half of the committee and grab the easiest region. We have started doing some voodoo early on (if only VCU was in their bracket). Overall, the Midwest looks loaded and should make for some good fun tomorrow night!
