Amigos Clinch Calcutta with Final Four Sweep

AMHERST – The Amigos won their first outright title in 13 years with a sweep of Arizona and UConn in the Final Four. Last shared title for the jumping beans was in 2019 where they shared a 3-way tie with the Elders and Slayers.

All time championship statistics are listed below as the Amigos moved up a spot in the all-time rankings after the 27th annual Calcutta.

A table with text and numbers

AI-generated content may be incorrect.

The Amigos were ablaze in Maize and Blue on Monday night reveling in their 6-point win. Things got a little dusty up in here as it was a long time coming and old teammate Bill the Cat had to be looking down chugging a Labatt Blue in a beer sabre admiring on his homies.

The Bunch had to play leader in the clubhouse and watch their lead evaporate after the UConn dagger sunk them in the Elite Eight. Yet another fine showing from the Chieftans who stand proudly on top of the heap in Calcutta lore. Their 16-win record withstood another Calcutta, in a year where they notched 4 second round wins to put them on the margin to the right.

The two top teams came in tied with the lowest ASR at 8.25, just behind yours truly.

The Catholic Boyz finished third for the second straight year and had a nice ride with Illinois but have the longest drought for an outright winner – 2006. They last shared a title in 2018.

The longest overall drought, rivaling the NY Jets, is the Counselors who haven’t won a title (shared or outright) since 2012.

The Elders have still never picked a national champ but have 5 titles to their name.

Was one of the more competitive Calcuttas, decided on Championship night.  Thanks again for playing.

All winners have been Venmo'd.

See y'all next year!

The shot heard 'round Amherst

AMHERST – Never has one shot had such an impact on an entire Calcutta than the one yesterday to wrap up the Elite Eight.

The Chieftans could have been sipping from the Chalise, other than one errant pass that found its way into enemy hands.

“The shot” opened the door for the Amigos and Catholic Boyz to keep their title hopes alive.  The Amigos can win it all with a Michigan sweep and can clinch a tie with a win in the Final Four.

The Catholic Boyz can only tie for the title and need an Illini sweep to accomplish that.

There is a rare scenario where all three can tie if Illinois beats Michigan in the final.

The Win-Docs and Counselors will continue to play looking for that natty cash and definitely will have the Chieftans riding their respective band wagons.

Let’s take a team-by-team capsule look into the weekend festivities:

Chieftans experience thrill of victory; agony of defeat all in one game

The Bunch of Chieftans looked like 9-time title holders (and could still get there) at halftime of the Duke-UConn game. What I’d give to see that group text thread. They now play leaders in the clubhouse with no dog left in the fight. Need help (or should I say “send help’).

Amigos almost pull off weekend double

At halftime on Saturday, it looked like the Amigos would be sitting chilly as Iowa continued to outkick their coverage and lead the Illini into the break. They held serve on Sunday with a powerful display by the Wolverines, but Arizona looms next weekend.

Catholic Boyz clinging to third

Purdue ran into a buzzsaw, but the Fightin Illini advance to let the Catholics see another day. You gotta be in it to win it and the Catholic Boyz have made a valiant Calcutta run. They secured a top three spot and can do no worse than third.

Counselors'
miraculous comeback – keeps them live for the natty

Need a sweep to cash – but had to be the moment of the tournament for the legal beagles.

Win-Doctors with the silent killer could take down the final

The Win-Docs get to follow for another weekend and the silent killer Arizona just keeps dismantling teams. Looking forward to the Michigan game and hoping it’s the late contest on Saturday.

Chieftans secure title share with Gator win, look for the whole enchilada next weekend

WIN-DOCTORS CAN CLAIM A SHARE IN ONE SCENARIO

AMHERST – The Chieftans powered their way to another Calcutta title, clinching at least a share of the top spot and winning outright in seven of eight possible scenarios next weekend. It will be their eighth outright or shared title.

The Win-Docs need Houston to run the table and Auburn to beat Florida in the semis to claim a tie with the Chieftans in the lone potential outcome that does not see the Bunch carrying the Calcutta Chalise alone next Monday night.

The Commish and Catholic Boyz were both eliminated over the weekend from title hopes but can catch a piece of the pie if things go the right way.

The Amigos will continue to play spoiler and can sneak into ties for third should Duke sweep the Final Four.

Let’s take a team-by-team capsule look into the weekend festivities:

Chieftans split Elite Eight games on way to share of title

The Bunch of Chieftans grabbed their first title since 2018 beating the Gator Drum, with an amazing come-from-behind win against 3-Texas Tech. Down nine with less than three minutes to play the Bunch’s squad rallied to salvage what could have been a potential disaster, knocking the Catholic Boyz out of the title hunt.

Win-Docs need sweep, Florida loss

The Win-Docs hopes of a share of their seventh title rests on a strong Houston squad, who will face their toughest test to date in the Dookies on Saturday. They will be rooting on the Tigers over the Gators to put them in the natty with a chance at a tie.

Catholic Boyz on sidelines, but not in bad shape

The Catholics will have to watch from the clubhouse next weekend awaiting the results, but they will cash in every scenario except one….an Auburn win over Houston in the final.

Tennessee loss dooms Commish, still can make noise with Auburn

The Commish’s title hopes went down early in the Houston-Vols game and now their laurels rest on the Tigers and can only finish as high as second with a sweep of the weekend games. Going to admit, thought Houston was the easiest road to the Final Four, but was dead wrong.

Fat Lady quieted, Amigos playing for that natty cash and outside shot at third

The Amigos will ride the hottest team into the Final Four and hope to Flagg down a natty. The Amigos control their own destiny and will be the major obstacle for the Win-Docs title hopes.

Here are the eight potential scenarios and payouts:

Florida over Duke:

Chieftans (13) - $1,200

Win-Docs (9) - $400

Catholic Boyz (9) - $400

Florida over Houston:

Chieftans (13) - $1,200

Win-Docs (10) - $500

Catholic Boyz (9) - $300

Auburn over Duke:

Chieftans (11) - $1,000

Commish (10) - $700

Win-Docs (9) - $150

Catholic Boyz (9) - $150

Auburn over Houston:

Chieftans (11) - $1,000

Commish (10) - $600

Win-Docs (10) - $400

Duke over Florida:

Chieftans (12) - $1,000

Amigos (9) - $467

Win-Docs (9) - $267

Catholic Boyz (9) - $266

Duke over Florida:

Chieftans (12) - $1,000

Amigos (9) - $400

Win-Docs (9) - $200

Catholic Boyz (9) - $200

Commish (9) - $200

Houston over Florida:

Chieftans (12) - $1,000

Win-Docs (11) - $700

Catholic Boyz (9) - $300

Houston over Auburn:

Win-Docs (11) - $950

Chieftans (11) - $750

Commish (9) - $150

Catholic Boyz (9) - $150

Good luck everyone!

FINAL FOUR REPORT: Slayers clinch 2023 Calcutta crown

AMHERST – Backed by a record-tying three teams advancing to the Final Four, the Slayers put away the 2023 Calcutta in dominating fashion. The Slayers lived up to their morning line favorite role with their three squads winning in each round to head to the Final Four with 12 wins and back-to-back titles. It will be their sixth title (third outright) since 1999 and the yellow jacket will stay home in 2023.

They tie the Bunch of Chieftans (2014) for advancing three teams to the Final Four. That year the Chieftans set the all-time win record with 16.

The Slayers used the final five minutes to springboard wins from their Florida-based teams. FAU got hot late on Saturday night to eliminate the higher seed Wildcats (Chieftans) and Miami trailing for most of the game stormed back to set Calcutta history with the big win against Texas (Commish).

The battle now is for second-place between the Counselors (10) and the Win-Docs (9) who snuck into the Final weekend with 5-San Diego State outlasting the BJs on a sucky last second call.  The Win-Docs have outplayed their odds, but need a win in the national semis to tie and in the natty to take sole control of the placing.

The Counselors had a rough weekend with both teams losing and hopes of catching the Slayers slipped away with the Creighton loss. “I object,” motioned Counselor co-owner Mark Aquino, but the objection fell on deaf ears and the jury rested.

The Chieftans failed to menace and will finish out of the money. Sad day, indeed. Never not funny.

A disappointing last-place finish (along with the Amigos) resulted from the Longhorn collapse in the final 10 minutes, squandering a 13-point second half lead and all but handing the Slayers the title and putting the Win-Docs out of reach from a miracle finish.

Here are the eight scenarios and payouts heading to Houston for the Final Four:

UConn or Miami over San Diego State

Slayers $1,200

Win-Docs $400

Counselors $400

UConn or Miami over FAU

Slayers $1,200

Counselors $500

Win-Docs $300

FAU over UConn or Miami

Slayers $1,200

Counselors $500

Win-Docs $300

San Diego State over UConn or Miami

Slayers $1,000

Win-Docs $700

Counselors $300

Final Four Report: Going down to the wire in Calcutta

Amherst, N.Y. (UPI) -- Trying to figure out this year's Calcutta has been tougher than a one-eared alley cat.

With four teams advancing to the Final Four, three sit one spot behind the idling Tax Slayers and one sits two back, all capable of having an engraving ceremony the Calcutta Chalise.

Incredible games with three of the four Elite Eight games going down to the wire and the fourth had a 3-ball that could have tightened up the Zags game. The only top seed to advance is the Amigos' Virginia, who had to be rooting hard for the Dukies who fell hard to Sparty in the waning moments.

Let's look at the capsules and probables as we head to the Twin Cities for the Final Four.

Tax Slayers (9 points). Must be rooting hard for the Cavs at this point and the 3-way tie to claim a slice of the title. Sweeps by any of the other three teams puts them in a tie for second, but the weekend worked out pretty well for the Slayers, who watched the weekend at home.

Tap Tap Tap....
Win-Docs (8 points). Biggest disappointment of the weekend, losing a 1-Gonzaga and 2-Kentucky both favored and wins would've slipped them past the Slayers and with two teams in the Final Four with 10 wins. Welp. There's always next year.

Woulda coulda shoulda (emphasis on shoulda)
Elder Statesman (8 points). Heartbreaker when Virginia hit the buzzer beater to send it into overtime and kept the Elders from sending two teams to Minny. They'll take the red hot 3-Texas Tech squad into the Final Four and a big matchup with the Commish and Sparty to see who will cash the bigger check. Great drafting by the Elders who once again surprise with a late run.

Catholic Boyz (8 points). War Eagle muther-effers. They just took down Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky in succession. That's some blue blood damage right there. Prayers answered and two wins away from an outright title. Divine intervention helps sometimes.

High Five!
The Commish (8 points). Down goes Duke. Down goes Duke. This was so good on so many levels. Now to get focused to make a run to a second title in three years. It's all on a focused veteran Sparty squad, but now they face defensive lockdown Tech in what should be a terrific game. Buckle your seatbelts for this Calcutta conclusion.

Two more.....

Amigos (7 points). Revived by a terrific play at the end of regulation, you know we were humming that tune, but these Amigos said Hola instead. The Hoos showed they mean business and will be favored in the national semifinal and the only representative left from the ACC. Two wins and they take the top dollar honors.

Lots of different combos, but if you take care of business next Saturday you cash. Good luck to all.

Calcutta: Catholic Boyz complete comeback in heavenly fashion

Amherst, NY -- Well it was holy week, after all.

Instead of Sister Jean and the Bunch celebrating an outright title and record seventh (two outright, five shared), they'll have to share it with the Catholic Boyz and Win-Docs. It was the first three-way tie since 2011 when the Boyz and Bunch tied the Elders, with exactly the same 11-point total. The Bunch sit up at night replaying the Houston debacle thinking what might have been.

The Boyz rode the Big Ragu all the way to the title, with hot-shooting Nova destroying the competition throughout winning every game by double-digit totals. The persistence of the Boyz down the stretch to keep the train rolling a share of their fourth title (one outright).

The Win-Docs had to look idly on throughout the Final Four after a hot start, but picked up a sixth title (four outright, two shared) and a piece of the cherished Chalise engraving. Syracuse basically kept them from the title with the Michigan State upset.

The Counselors, shackled with the morning line favorite title, made a keen run to the finals that ended with Coach Beilein's second loss in a championship game. The WNY hex continues.

It was a Calcutta to remember, with the Win-Docs grabbing a piece of the record books with seven first-round wins. The Amigos also etched their name in the books for futility, with a record one first round win and overall tournament total. X marks the spot.

Calcutta: Final Four Report

Amherst, N.Y. -- And then there were four.

As in, Calcutta teams holding on for a chance at the coveted Chalise (sic). The Win-Doctors are gone, but not forgotten, sitting tied for the top spot with the Bunch and needing Michigan to run the table. They both are assured of cashing, now it's a matter of playing for history, record books and bragging rights.

The Bunch's potential clinching win was Slayed in the Elite Eight

Final Four Report: Commish clinches first-ever Calcutta title

Amherst, N.Y. -- I've waited 19 years to write that headline.

The drought is finally over. After 18 years of futility, the Commish & Associate finally will wear the Yellow Jacket and see "Team Commish" inscribed on the Chalise.

Tears of Joy at Team Commish Headquarters
A passionate 7-South Carolina squad survived a thrilling final two minutes against 4-Florida to put the 2017 Calcutta on ice for the ole Commish. With 12 wins heading into the Final Four and an automatic win in the Gonzaga-SC semifinal, it's all over except for deciding the national champ and the runner-up spots.

Not having to sweat out the 2-Kentucky game and the buzzer beater loss to the Catholic Boyz' 1-UNC Tar Heels, the Commish got their business done early on both Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday, 1-Gonzaga showed why they deserved a one-seed by taking out a game Xavier team.

The Boyz will continue to march on with a chance for a sole shot at second place with a win over the Tax Slayers' 3-Oregon Ducks in the semifinal.

The Catholic Boyz Concession Speech did not go as planned.
A tough loss by 10-Xavier on Saturday night cost the Boyz a shot at a potential title and when So Carolina continued their winning ways on Sunday, it was time to throw in the white robe.

The Tax Slayers can still claim a tie for second/third with a sweep of the Final Four, the gutsy team from the PAC-12 is playing good ball right now and could catch UNC off guard in Phoenix.

The Counselors early success puts them in the money, but they are sitting on the sidelines rooting for an Oregon loss in the national championship for their best case scenario.
